I bought some non-photo blue pencils to try them out since a lot of artist swear by them. I do like it that I don't have to erase after I draw whatever and it has come in handy with Rose City this last time around. I think it will make lettering a lot easier as well. Anyway, to make sure that my scanner would indeed not pick up the pencils when I scanned it I just drew a random image and so I turned this thing out. It is a few characters from the zombie apocalypse dnd game we have been playing. This is just a scribe and a soldier from an ultra religious survivors camp that has appeared near us.

Here are two drawings of girls. One was done about 6 months ago (the Ween girl) and one about a week ago (based off a panel of Kim Pine from Scott Pilgrim). You can see the difference...or maybe you can't. I think I do. I still need to work on eyes and on their stances. I have a hardtime drawing acurate stances. They always look awkward. I have been just drawing pictures of girls from other comics and photos to work on stances.
So as part of my lent rules I'm trying to force myself to draw more (and hopefully do other bad things less!). Here is another update. I actually drew this before Lent but what I have drawn so far isn't scanned so it seems easier to up some of the older stuff I have gotten done. My buddy Ben (who is going to start cowriting HR) runs a D&D style zombie rpg at his place. I was graciously invited and enjoy it thoroughly. It is way more fun than I would have guessed, it would be even more fun if I wasn't the worse dice roller ever. But I digress! The game is fun and is based on us, your character is just yourself which makes it all kinds of fun. It was suggested that I start to draw all of us as our +5 year selves so I started with Jess, the sole female member of our nerd crew. She is the pack rat class and all I could think was tank girl. Her only requirement was that she have shotgun shells in her ears and bullets gauged in her chest, which is why she is topless (sort of) because I didnt know how else to show that part of her chest. This is extrememly influenced by Hewlett's Tank Girl so props go to him for some inspiration. Anyway here it is, I as always as for comments on what you think! I will try and update again this week with more stuff, maybe just some ink drawings I have done at work. We will see.

Oh and by the way, the empty space on her right (our left) arm is there for me to include our zombie killing militias logo, if we ever get one.

Here is something I drew a little while ago for my good friend Katie. Katie is a pretty cool girl who has been dropping less than subtle hints for me to draw a picture of her. Always a sucker for a cute girl I have complied. She was really excited about it which makes it worth it cause seriously there is no reason for me to draw things other than the reaction it brings. Her's made it worth the time spent. The image here is a "painted" version of the pen and ink I did for her. I colored it inside photoshop and purposely didnt stay in the lines. I like the way it turned out, I may be the only one who does though.
Rose City #69 - How the "magic" happens...

Alright, as promised the steps to making a Rose City comic. This will probably only be interesting to a very small subsect of our readership, which is itself a very small subsect. So since this will be a huge image post I cut this entry. Click the link below for the whole thing. Enjoy or something.

First, the script! Schuyler usually sends me the script on Sunday afternoon or night and I tend to do the layout then. He is pretty bare with descriptions for locations and what the characters are doing, unless he has something particular in mind. This gives me free reign to draw whatever, which isn't always good cause I come up with nothing.

Party On Pogues

Panel 1

Pogs: kate invited me to the tna sorority house party. do you guys
want to come?

sky: the girl that called us out to the ghost investigation?

Panel 2

sky: i guess we could come with you. why do you want to take us?

pogs: because it would make it easier to hang out in an unfamiliar place.

sky: fair enough. maybe i should've said, why are you inviting him?

Panel 3

Klosterman in his D&D dungeon master gear

Kast: prepare to eat my 20s... bitches

So after reading the strip I decide the setting if Schuyler doesn't specify one. For this comic I decided it should be in someone's house, perhaps the RC crew all lives together. I don't know. Stop asking questions. I sometimes draw up a thumbnail version of the strip if I am having trouble deciding where to place the characters. This strip was pretty straight forward so I just did the lay out full size. The comic is draw on an 8 1/2 x 11 inch peice of paper, but the image itself is only 6 1/2 x 8 inches. Each panel is roughly 4 inches high and the small panels are roughly 3 1/4 inches wide. I then draw the basic outline of the characters. Just the main things like heads and arms. If there is something special to go into the panel I sometimes do a rough of it so I dont forget to put it into the final. The layout looks like this:

Next I go back and draw in the detail. Since I have been drawing this for more than a year now I have gotten sort of lazy with the pencils and tend to just draw the detail in the head/face and on hands if I need too. Otherwise I just wing it during the inks. It is a bad habit, I can tell you, but I have always been lazy at art. That is why there aren't backgrounds usually.

Then once I am happy with the pencils I go back over and ink them. I use Micron ink pens. I do all the character line work with a number 2 (.30mm) and a #8 (.50mm) for the panel outlines. Sometimes I use a smalled tip for more detail or when I used to do cross hatching. Inking is pretty straight forward. This is where I hope I didnt forget anything cause otherwise it is too late to fix. I often screw up when I am inking. It is a little more difficult than I would have thought.

After that I scan the document as black and white and then open it in Photoshop to grayscale it. That is a pretty simple process of just clicking with the fill tool. Not very much fun at all. You end up with this:

Finally I put in the lettering. You can see that I slightly edited the script for this one and changed where some of the dialogue went. This was for effect in the last panel and also to make panel 2 less crowded since I didn't leave enough room for the dialogue when I drew it. I tend to not think ahead very well.

And there you have it. I toss it into a template with the title field and rose logo already on it. Then I upload it to the server and you see it on Wendesday. The wonders of the internet. I hope you enjoyed this somewhat. I always find it interesting to see how different artist draw their comic. If for some reason you have questions feel free to ask. That's about it. Later...or something.

I know I haven't been good at updating this thing so here is more art work for you all. This is a bit of quick art I did. I hate to think of a cute girl like this being broken hearted, but that is how life goes sometimes. It builds you up and then just beats the shit out of you and leaves you bleeding in the gutter. It's not that I'm bitter or anything...

Check it:

I drew up a series of images I thought I might put up, but then I never actually went and did it cause I am lazy and I really don't go many places. Maybe some day I will be one of those people, but for now I am just boring me. However, if you have a room in your house you want someone to draw horrible Sharpie images on give me a call. I found like 8 images I wanted to scan but never got around too so maybe this weekend I can knock them out and start getting them online. I have also fallen back into being lazy about drawing. Something I need to remedy. I bought to cheap ass sketch pads last time I was at Craft 2000 so I will try to fill them up with lady sketches and other things. I definitely need more partice that is for sure. Here this week's girl Friday:

<img src="http://collectivecomics.net/misc/sharpiegirl.gif" alt="Nothing special, just a Sharpie drawing of a girl, you know how it goes in the Wild Wild West.
I drew this at work super fast as you can probably tell. It is with a sharpie on a peice of 8 x 11 paper. It is actually a large image. It turned out fairly well, I guess. Especially since the tip of my sharpie is pretty much gone. I am drawing with a nub anymore. More art later this week I think, there are some turtle verus bunny pin-ups I did that I could show you off or some new ink drawings. I am really running out of things to draw, other than people's faces. I need suggestions people.

Really I came up with this girls Fridays thing just so I would have an excuse to quote that Beastie Boys song "Girls". That is half true. That song is amazing though. Haha. Anyway, I have been lazy and haven't got some of my newer drawings scanned in so I am going to post a drawing I did for this waitress I thought was cute. She worked at Fridays and her name was Chelsea (and everyone knows Skinhead boys love Chelsea girls). She doesn't work there anymore, I don't think, I don't know. Anyway, I drew this not really for her more just cause I was trying to draw more woman and it seemed like a good idea. I was later told she didn't even think it looked like her, which is kind of harsh since it is a fucking comic book likeness. Anyway, I fucked up her hat and her shoulders, but here you go.

See the post below this and make suggestions of things for me to draw. It is like a free commission, except you don't get the art and it probably won't turn out as well!

-Pogues!

Is there something you want to see me draw? Or just any idea of things to try? Let me know in the comments. I need ideas and I am not coming up with any.

Another musically inspired ink drawing for you all. I was listening to the Decemberist album Crane Wife and I drew this. It depicts when the man realizes that his wife is actually a crane he rescued and that she has been spinning silk from her feathers. It is an old Japanese fairy tale, hence the top knot. I drew this with my trusty Uniball pen. Good times.

It's Friday and its girl time. Yay! This one is probably one of the best drawings i have done of girl. This is a friend of Schulte's who apparently is a big fan of my art, which is weird and awesome. I said I would draw a pin-up for her if she just sent me a message and it turns out this girl is just ridiculously cute. I mean like top 5 hot, haha. Another reason to hate Schulte I suppose. Anyway, here is what I came up for her, I think it turned out. If only I could have worked out a way to meet her...Oh well :P

<img src="http://collectivecomics.net/misc/girl01.gif" alt="Quoting Reel Big Fish is the surest way to not get a girlfriend.
So when I was working on new Hangar Rats comics I decided to update all the characters looks and in the process I also did new pinups of some of the cast. I have since become lazy and now drawn anymore of the cast or new Hangar Rats, which is something I will have to change soon...

Anyway, one of the pin-ups I did was of me and was done in such a way as to also work on drawing pin-ups cause just a guy standing somewhere is boring. This one has random background designs and floating objects of my obsession. It is true that all a person needs in life is punk, comics and mixtapes. At least I hope so...

<img src="http://collectivecomics.net/misc/pogues1.gif" alt="If only I was as cool as comic likeness, then maybe it wouldn't be weird that draw myself all the time. <lj:music>"Girls" - The Beastie Boys</lj:music>

It's Friday and it's time for girls. Or at least one. I was going to put up a different girl image today, but I can't find the file so whatever. Next week. Anyway, here is this weeks girl drawing. I'm not sure this one turned out all that well either really. I think I am getting a little better at the small things like eyes and lips. I think. I sort of drew and inked this fairly quickly and didn't pay as much attention as I should, thus it has some inking mistakes. You know how these things go. Maybe. My goal here was to draw a girl with the wind blowing through her hair, i actually drew here whole body but it looked pretty bad so i cropped it out. Save you guys from having to see it. The rest turned out..all right. Didn't it?

Next week I will have a drawing I actually like. A pin-up I did for a fan which turned out pretty good. I will try and update a couple of times next week with some pen only drawings I have done.

Update week two. Check it. Here is another all pen drawing I did at work, it was actually done entirely in sharpie on some sheet of paper my job requires me to waste. Stupid job. Anyway, I have no real idea what this was supposed to be other than the fact that it is a guy who is apparently in love with some girl he just walked past. She is supposed to be closer to the viewer hence her larger size, it isn't very clear but cut me some slack I drew this with zero planning on what I was drawing. So here is another pen drawing, I think I am getting a little better at them...I hope.
